Ceremonial Viking Shield
The Viking shield is one of the most iconic pieces from Norse history. At first glance the Viking shield may not seem to be that much different than other shields from history, however that couldn’t be farther from the truth. These shields designed by the Norse were not crude objects with poor construction thrown together with no forethought. In fact, they were brilliantly constructed with a superior design.
The Norse shield was a brilliant concept ahead of its time. In an effort to create a functional work of art we have painstakingly, and historically built a Viking shield just like they would have a thousand years ago.
This shield was built with basswood or ” Linden Wood” which translates to “Shield Wood” which has two characteristics that make it perfect for shields. Its lightweight and it extremely hard to split. This shield is painted with period correct paint colors and is constructed with wood treenails and showcases a unique boss forged and shaped over a fluting stake.
Original Viking shields were approximately 30 inches around and very thin-usually less than ½ inch. Ours measures approximately 29 x 29
